Hidilyn Diaz is a Filipino athlete from Zamboanga City, Philippines who recently won a silver medal in 2016 Rio Olympics and ending the Philippines’ 20 year Olympic medal drought since the 1996 Summer Olympics.
Few may recall, but the last medal that Philippines got was when Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco Jr. won silver in the men’s 48kg light flyweight boxing category at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.
Hidilyn Diaz recorded a total weight of 200 kg in the Rio 2016 Women’s 53 kg weightlifting competition, landing her 2nd place, and edging Korea’s Yoon Jin Hee who took bronze medal with 199 kg. Gold medal goes to Hsu Shu-Ching of Chinese-Taipei with a recorded total weight of 212 kg.
